Name: Edie Waskel, MS
Title: Medical Student
School/Program: Western University of Health Sciences, College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific
Currently Wearing: The Elizabeth B. Women's Athletic Fit Lab Coat
Why did you choose your profession?:
My first job was as a lifeguard and it sparked an interest in responding and adapting quickly to help others with their health. I worked as a medical scribe in the Emergency Department and through my own experiences and listening to the ED docs I worked with, I really grew to love the emergency med environment. I kept my options open through my med school rotations but ultimately loved a little bit of everything, which can be found usually only in family med or emergency medicine, so I stuck with my gut and will be matching into emergency medicine this year!
Current Passion Project:
I have a huge passion for social medicine, especially creating awareness and education for increased medical care to those suffering from homelessness or victims of human trafficking. I am also proud to advocate for women in medicine and the osteopathic profession.
Who was/is your inspiration?
My parents have worked so hard to support me and my twin sister as we grew up, never letting us know just how hard it was to make ends meet between paychecks. My parents did not go to college, so my sister and I figured that out together and then also figured out how to pursue careers in medicine. She is now a neurology PA and I am going to be an emergency medicine resident in a few short months!
Fun Fact 1:
I have a twin sister and we never found out if we are identical or fraternal.
Fun Fact 2:
I love adventures - one of my most epic adventures is rock climbing the side of Half Dome and hiking down the other side in Yosemite National Park.
