Skincare as Self-Care

As a busy medical student, there’s just not enough time in the day to do everything I would want to. Which means that sometimes, self-care goes by the wayside. But one of the ways I love to incorporate self-care in my day to day routine is through my skincare routine!

I’ve always been into skincare since I have a long-standing battle with acne, so I’m very particular about my routine. Lately though, I’ve been more into how I can use this time to not only take care of my skin but also myself as a whole. In the evening time, I spend about ten to fifteen minutes “taking the day off”. Here’s a little peek into my current skincare routine:

First, I take off any make-up with a cleansing balm. This allows me to not just rub off my make up but to instead give myself a facial massage.

Second, I go in with a second cleanser to remove and remaining impurities. I follow the double-cleanse method and love the results and how clean my skin feels.

Third, I apply toner and currently have been loving the one by Son and Park called “Beauty Water”. It’s such a refreshing formula and all I do is put some on my hands and pat it in. No cotton pad required.

Next, I apply my treatment product from a brand called Curology. This brand creates specialized treatments for those with acne after you’ve consulted with a dermatology physician assistant or nurse practitioner online via a detailed survey and photos of your skin. I think it’s an innovative way to do skincare and allows access to medical-grade treatments for those who need it most. I’m really excited to see my progress with this product!

Finally, I apply my eye cream (I use the Ole Henriksen Banana Bright Eye Cream), and then my moisturizer (currently using the Klair’s Midnight Blue Calming Cream).

And, Voila! As I go through these steps, I try to just really slow down and calm my mind and check in with myself. It really helps me relax and unwind prior to going to bed.
